A Message from the Founder

Luann E. Van Campen, PhD, MA-Bioethics

If you found your way to this webpage, you likely have a story that is similar in some respects to mine. Maybe you have felt similar pain points as you have tried to move values to action within the biopharmaceutical industry.

Have you ever:

  • been uncertain how to raise or address an ethics concern in a meeting?
  • been uncertain how to develop a policy that is infused with ethical issues?
  • been uncertain about the difference between ethics and compliance or ethics and bioethics?
  • been asked to lead a bioethics initiative but didn’t know where to start?
  • seen the need for a refreshed approach to ethics in biopharma?

BEFORE BIOETHICS TRAINING

While employed at Eli Lilly and Company, I was delegated an unwanted assignment to develop a new policy. I thought the project would be dull and I was uncertain how to approach the task. Soon, though, I became intrigued with the policy’s ethical implications — which proved to be both challenging and inspiring.

This thought-provoking exercise revealed where my project team and I had some ethics knowledge and skills gaps and reignited an interest in bioethics. Later key interactions then motivated me to pursue academic training.

AFTER BIOETHICS TRAINING

My master’s degree training and mentor relationships established a strong foundation in bioethics, but subsequently leading Lilly’s global bioethics program highlighted the absence of resources tailored to biopharmaceutical industry responsibilities.

My team and I had to build Lilly Bioethics from the ground up without industry-specific methodology, training, or job aids. It took about four years to optimize our effectiveness, efficiency and consistency. I sometimes wonder how our first years might have been different had those resources been available.

SHARED LEARNING MOTIVATION

Due to biopharma’s wide-reaching impact, specific ethical responsibilities, and limited bioethics resources, sharing expertise in biopharmaceutical bioethics is critical. To help address this need, EthicsMatters ACADEMĒ was founded.

The ACADEMĒ shares a perspective on biopharmaceutical bioethics that has developed over two decades of industry experience and discourse. It provides a well-researched and pressure-tested foundation upon which professional acumen and organizational implementation can build.

the Vision for EthicsMatters Academē

EthicsMatters ACADEMĒ aims to build a cohort of biopharma professionals who are influential ethical leaders making well-reasoned decisions for the benefit of all stakeholders—but especially for the benefit of patients who rely on trustworthy biopharma practices and products.

I encourage you to take advantage of EthicsMatters ACADEMĒ. Join the growing number of biopharma professionals who look at their work through a bioethics lens and move values to action!

how does the academē work?

Who should enroll in EthicsMatters ACADEMĒ?

The ACADEMĒ was designed for substantive professional development rather than basic training. It is most applicable for biopharma leaders who need to integrate bioethics into their organization and biopharma professionals who want to lead in their sphere of influence. University students who want to supplement a bioethics or professional (e.g., medical, pharmacy, nursing) program may also benefit.

How is the material presented?

Learning Modules are delivered in a creatively engaging online written format. Corresponding assignments or job aids are easily downloaded.

How long does it take to complete a Learning Module?

Learning Module durations vary based on the focus of the content. Estimated durations are noted on a Learning Module landing page. You can pause and restart a Learning Module at any time. Your progress will be charted on your Profile page so you know where you left off.

What if I have questions about lesson, assignment or job aid content?

This training is a self-directed, self-paced program. Most questions can be answered by carefully reading the provided examples. They were extensively developed for this purpose. For more substantial support, see the list of EthicsMatters LLC services.

Can I access the Job Aids directly?

Yes. You can directly access and download a Learning Module’s Job Aids by going to the landing page of a corresponding Lesson. To get the most benefit from the Job Aids, it is strongly recommended you take the time to read and digest the corresponding Lessons before starting to use them.

Is there technical support?

Yes. Contact us via the contact form on this website at any time for technical support. Try to be as specific as possible about your issue (internet service, browser, or device you are using as well as where in the ACADEMĒ you encountered a difficulty). We will try to respond within two business day (EST).

Is there a money-back guarantee?

No. We cannot offer a money-back guarantee on individual or organizational outcomes due to the variability of organizational structures, operations, management styles, and goals across the biopharma sector. We can, however, guarantee that completing any Learning Module will teach you something new and valuable about ethical thinking. Regular practice of these skills will enhance your effectiveness and influence in your job.

Is there a university student discount?

We are actively working on this. Check back soon for details!

Is there continuing education credit or certification?

At this time, we do not offer continuing education credit and there is no formal certification associated with EthicsMatters ACADEMĒ.
